Event Details

Learn how to load and manage data with PostGIS, the spatial extension to the PostgreSQL database. This class is intended for those comfortable with basic GIS concepts and using the command line. Learning SQL will take your GIS skills to the next level; a single line of SQL can tackle issues that would take multiple lines of Python code or half an hour clicking in a GUI. Many spatial operations take seconds on PostGIS and would take hours on desktop systems.

This class will introduce a number of topics in PostGIS:

  • Installation and configuration of your database
  • Loading Shapefiles in to the spatial database
  • Basic SQL concepts and syntax
  • Geometry manipulation and spatial relationships in the database
  • Spatial Joins - answer complex queries across layers
  • Projecting your data directly in the database

Format:

This course is being offered as a webinar. The course material was originally developed for a full day workshop, which included full exercises that students would work through. For the 3-hour version an expert instructor will lead you through the workshop material and demonstrate exercises. Students can either follow along to or complete at their own pace after the class.

While the instructor demonstrates the exercises and works through the material students will have ample opportunity to ask questions and get direct feedback. The instructor will be assisted by an expert 'helper' who can answer questions one-on-one.

The session has a limit of 25 participants, and includes dedicated question and answer time at the conclusion of the course. Afterwards students will receive a video of the session, a copy of all presented materials, instructions on where to get additional training materials and a certificate of participationPlease note that the materials for this course are available at workshops.opengeo.org.
